Twenty years ago — 1999

Dr. Josef M. Powell, DVM, founder of the Fredonia Animal Hospital, was honored for 30 years of service to the Dunkirk-Fredonia community during the 22nd annual Business Person of the Year luncheon at the White Inn. A lifelong area resident, Dr. Powell and Linda, his wife of 32 years, opened the veterinary medical service located at the corner of Route 60 and Lakeview Avenue on March 19, 1969. The Fredonia Animal Hospital recently received a four-year accreditation fomr the American Animal Hospital Association. Only 10 percent of all animal hospitals in North America are accredited.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A new concept in marketing the Sheridan industrial site was outlined recently. The Sheridan Task Force is considering switching its emphasis of marketing the 1,200 acres from trying to find one or more industrial tenants to working with one or more developers. The site would become known as Eagle Bay Commerce Center. The 1,200 acres in Sheridan represent probably the largest “green field” virgin site in this part of the United States.

Forty years ago — 1979

Louis Pelletter of Karen Drive, Silver Creek, was appointed assistant curator of the Silver Creek Historical Center by Silver Creek Mayor Theodore Welch. Mr. Pelletter and Pat Pfleuger, curator, were instrumental in beginning the center that is located upstairs in the municipal building. Mr. Pelletter will serve as assistant curator with no compensation or expense account≥

Fifty years ago — 1969

F. Neil Chaffie, former reporter for the OBSERVER and presently a staff reporter for the Jamestown Post-Journal, won the endorsement of the Republican City Committee as the party’s mayoral candidate in the upcoming city election. Mr. Chaffie beat out Mrs. Joan Dean despite an 11th-hour appeal for support by the woman politician. Mr. Chaffie stated that, if elected, he would strive to expedite the faltering housing and urban renewal plan.
