Twenty years ago — 1999

The Kiwanis Club of Cassadaga Valley selected Robert Peterson as Kiwanian of the Year at a ceremony held recently at Cassadaga Country Club. Each year, the honor goes to a member who has contributed his time and effort not only toward club activities, but to the community at large. Mr. Peterson has served as Sinclairville trustee and mayor for several terms and is the past treasurer of the Sinclairville Volunteer Fire Department. He also is chairman of the Harvest Pancake Breakfast held each fall in Sinclairville.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The Dunkirk High School Band has been selected by the Fourth of July Celebration Committee to participate in the annual National Independence Day Festival. For the second year, the band will appear on the stage in concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on July 4. The committee sent out 250 invitations to high school bands throughout the country, which then had to submit audition tapes. Only five bands were chosen. On July 5, the DHS band, under the direction of Clinton H. Lewis, will perform a special concert at the Lincoln Memorial.

Forty years ago — 1979

Joanne Beth Redband, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Redband and a senior at Fredonia High School, has been selected Student of the Week. She has participated in the Girls Athletic Association, Drama Club, Spanish Club and chorus. Joanne also is the 3-1-3 program at Fredonia State University College. Following graduation, Joanne plans to pursue a career in medical technology at Fredonia State.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Marian Riedesel, valedictorian of the Class of 1969 at Westfield Academy and Central School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Riedesel, Academy Street, Westfield. A New York State Regents scholarship winner, Marian will attend the State University of New York at Albany. She is a member of the National Honor Society, serves as editor of the yearbook, and was stage manager of the school’s musical, “Camelot.”
