The intersection at Leming Street and Lake Shore Drive East in Dunkirk has both a modern and historic background. Leming Street, which should be spelled “Lemming,” was named by Governor DeWitt Clinton — one of the early settlers who named streets in the first and second wards. Lake Shore Drive East was once known as Front Street until residents brought requests to the city government to change its name.

The Cardinal Mindszenty High School Class of 1969 celebrated their 20-year reunion at the Kosciuszko Club in Dunkirk. As they arrived, each classmate received a picture name tag, bottle of wine and profile book of each classmate’s history which was dedicated in the memory of Judith A. Smoczynski. The invocation was given by Rev. Nicholas Rossello, class adviser. Special guests were faculty members Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nesslin, Sister Mary Patrick and Mrs. Joan Dean.

Mayor Snyder denied he issued a directive, saying the fire department has been providing emergency service for years and the city has no intention of giving that up.

Fifty years ago — 1969
