Twenty years ago — 1999

Drivers will be slowing down in the areas around some schools this fall following action by the Dunkirk Common Council. A local law establishing a 15 mph speed in certain school zones between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on days when school is in session was approved by a 4-1 vote. Councilman-at-Large Norman Nalepa cast the lone vote in opposition, explaining he thinks the 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. timeframe is too extensive.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Charles Nebral has been appointed the new principal at Forestville Central School. The probationary period is for two years and Mr. Nebral is to receive a salary of $41,000 this year, pro-rated. He takes over the position left vacant with the resignation of John Szydlo, which the board of education accepted at its last meeting. Mr. Szydlo subsequently was appointed to an elementary teacher’s position.

Forty years ago — 1979

County Executive Joseph Gerace recently presented to County Historian Elizabeth Crocker a copy of the newly published “Historic Chautauqua County: a guide to 10 historical societies, 12 museums and spots of interest. The 27-page pamphlet is dedicated to Miss Crocker and published by county government.

Fifty years ago — 1969

A UPI news release dated Aug. 13 told of the slaying of a Marine lieutenant colonel and five of his men by North Vietnamese troops. One of the Marines was Pfc. Brian Edward Wolfe, an 18-year-old former Silver Creek resident who had been in Saigon only 10 days. His grandmother, Lucille Wagner, lives at 101 Main St., Silver Creek.
