Twenty years ago — 1999

Bob Patterson, youth and recreation director for the city of Dunkirk, will be taking up residence on the roof of city hall in an effort to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County. He will begin his “camping trip” on Aug. 20 with a goal of spending at least 100 hours there. Donations will increase the amount of time Mr. Patterson spends on the roof. Donations of $100 or more will allow for the opportunity to join him on the roof for lunch.

Thirty years ago — 1989

David A. Banach, DDS, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Banach of Dunkirk, received the Academy of General Dentistry’s prestigious Fellowship Award during a special ceremony at the AGD’s recent annual meeting in New York. Dr. Banach graduated from the SUNY at Buffalo Dental School in 1982 and has served in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps for seven years.

Forty years ago — 1979

The Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation is still considering building a plant in the Brocton-Portland area. Niagara Mohawk’s project committee has indicated that the site is still under consideration, but starting dates and locations would not be announced until a later date.

Fifty years ago — 1969

When Circus Bartok comes to town Aug. 17, Fredonia resident Frank Carbone of 189 West Main St. will visit the circus grounds to meet his old friends. As a circus clown with many of the great circuses in the country, Frank, who prefers to be known as “Cookie the Clown,” made many friends with the sawdust crowd, including the two greatest clowns who ever lived, Emmett Kelly and Lou Jacobs.
