Twenty years ago — 1999

Members of Dunkirk’s state champion softball team were honored and received a $500 donation from the city to help with expenses for the team’s trip to the regional championship. The 15-16-year-old Senior League softball team won the state championship over the weekend in Webster and will advance to the Eastern Regional in Orange, Conn. Coaches and team members were introduced during the city’s Common Council meeting by team manager Frank Gawronski, who said the team will be representing both Dunkirk and the state.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The Brocton Arch, which stands at the intersection of Main Street and Highland and Lake avenues, was built in 1913 to commemorate the centennial of the town of Portland. Now 76 years old itself, the Arch is the only four-way structure of its type remaining in the United States. An area landmark, the Brocton Arch has 124 light bulbs, which are switched on at night, and an additional 12 bulbs circling the corona in the middle of the structure.

Forty years ago — 1979

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Daniel Anson, 23, a Dunkirk firefighter who was killed in the line of duty while fighting a fire in the early morning hours of Aug. 8. The fund got off to a big start when a $1,000 check was presented from the officers of the One Hundred Club of Buffalo.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Hurricane Camille, kicking off deadly tornadoes in her path, shrieked around the Gulf Coast early today with 190-mile per hour winds and flood tides laying waste to entire cities and killing at least 12 persons. Countless others were missing or feared dead in the wake of the worst hurricane ever recorded by man. Damage ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
