Retrospective

Twenty years ago — 1999

The former Niagara Motors building at the city line on Route 60 in Dunkirk is heading for demolition. Mayor Robert Kesicki has issued a raze or repair order on the structure which he said is part of an estate. Fieldbrook Farm’s property borders the facility and is concerned the building has become an “attractive nuisance” for vandals and children. In addition, the appearance of the building in its current condition is unappealing and leaves a bad impression on customers and visitors to the ice cream plant.

The new supervised adult residential home being built on a parcel of land adjacent to 54 Matteson St., Fredonia by the J.N. Adam Developmental Center in Perrysburg is about 70 percent complete. Cost of the one-story ranch is estimated at $534,060. Site work for the facility, which will serve 12 mentally-retarded, developmentally-disabled individuals, began in early March.

Forty years ago — 1979

The Most Rev. Edward D. Head, bishop of Buffalo, has appointed the Rev. Donald S. Fafinski as the first youth minister for the Dunkirk-Fredonia area. Bishop Head noted that the assignment initiates a new program in the diocese. It is the first of its kind in the sense that the diocese is designating a priest to work full time as a youth minister. A Dunkirk native, Father Fafinski was educated locally at St. Hyacinth School and Cardinal Mindszenty High School.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Receding waters uncovered dozens of bodies today as rescue workers plodded through the rubble left by killer Hurricane Camille on her rampage through Mississippi’s Gulf Coast playground. The death toll mounted to at least 106. Damage is conservatively estimated at $250 million. More than 200,000 people were left homeless.
