Twenty years ago — 1999

Cheerleaders Jenna Lee Mansfield and Brooke Antolini, both of Fredonia, and Ashley Hamilton of Westfield, recently attended cheerleader camp at Ohio State University, sponsored by the Universal Cheerleaders Association, where they were chosen for the UCA All Stars and given an invitation to London for the Millennium London Parade being held Jan. 1, 2000. The girls were chosen based on ability, spirit and enthusiasm.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A “Do You Remember?” photo courtesy of the Historical Museum of Barker Library shows the Red Wing Company during its beginning. The Red Wing Co. was established at its present location at 196 Newton St., Fredonia in 1912 as a subsidiary of the Cudahy Packing Co., a large meat-packing plant in Chicago. During its first 10 years of operation, the company processed apples and grapes, using mostly manual labor.

Forty years ago — 1979

Frustrated because their recommendations carry little weight, all five members of the Dunkirk Planning Board have resigned. The board claims Mayor Gilbert Snyder and the Dunkirk Common Council have no intention of using the planning board for the purposes for which it was established. The five members are George Fitzer, Robert Manzella, Robert Harris, William McGraw and Andrew Dziduch.

Fifty years ago — 1969

The universal gladiator, described as “the most versatile physical conditioning system ever developed,” is being put to good use during its first week at Dunkirk High School. Football players are using it under the watchful eye of football coach Vince Keough and athletic director Angelo Pagano. Also new to the DHS football picture this fall is the use of videotape replay on a television screen.
