Twenty years ago – 1999

Shaun P. Heenan will be the Democratic candidate for councilman at large in the city of Dunkirk following a victory in the primary election. In the first city Democratic primary in more than 20 years, Mr. Heenan defeated challenger Richard R. Makuch by a margin of 427 to 337. A local businessman, Mr. Heenan received the endorsement for the council at large post in May. However, Mr. Makuch filed a petition with the board of elections seeking a primary.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Rosetta Haynes, a former Dunkirk High School honor student, has begun graduate study in English language and literature at Cornell University in Ithaca. She is enrolled in a five-year MA/Ph.D program, majoring in Afro-American literature. Ms. Haynes was also accepted into similar programs at Princeton and Harvard universities. She plans to pursue a college teaching career.

Forty years ago – 1979

Reluctantly, the city of Dunkirk, home of two steel plants, is seeking permission to use import steel sheet piling for a proposed repair job at the city pier. The federal Economic Development Administration which provided Dunkirk with a grant of $1,240,000 for renovation of the pier last year, requires contractors to used domestic steel for these projects. The city of Dunkirk is asking the EDA to waive this requirement because domestic steel reportedly would not be available before late December.

Fifty years ago — 1969

The year 1969 marks the centennial of the development of Welch’s grape juice and Sept. 23 is the anniversary of the firm’s first grape processing. The corporation reported sales during fiscal 1968 in excess of $65,000,000. Raymond T. Ryan is president of Welch Foods Inc., which employs about 1,300 in its general office and plant in Westfield as well as other plants scattered across the country.
