Twenty years ago – 1999

Nearly 100 residents voiced varying opinions to county officials on the proposed Millennium Parkway in the town of Dunkirk during a 90-minute informational meeting. The proposed roadway is part of a comprehensive master plan adopted by the Chadwick Bay Region communities in 1996. The county’s goal is to create 800 jobs to support a $13 million bond issue which would fund infrastructure improvements in all north and south county industrial parks. The initial bond issue includes $5.6 million for the Chadwick Bay Industrial Park.

Thirty years ago — 1989

An eight-year old study that followed more than 13,000 people showed that physical activity significantly reduces the risk of death from virtually all causes, including heart disease and cancer. While the risk of death was lowest among those who were the most active, the study’s authors say that even a slight increase in activity may reduce death rates among the least fit.

Forty years ago – 1979

Lou and Theresa Dispenza recently purchased the Oliver Lee house on Central Avenue in Silver Creek and are in the process of renovating the 150-year-old structure. The main floor, with more than 20 rooms and six fireplaces, was a masterpiece of craftsmanship when completed in 1832 and while the landmark retains much of its original charm, a great deal of work remains before the building is restored to its original condition.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Miss Judy Fries, a 17-year-old Silver Creek Central High School senior, was selected Silver Creek Jaycees Junior Miss at the recent pageant held recently before more than 600 persons at Silver Creek Junior-Senior High School Auditorium. A talented vocalist, she also won the talent contest. She sang “My Coloring Book.” Judy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fries of Hanford Bay.
