Twenty years ago – 1999

The presentation of awards for service to the Hispanic community was among the highlights as Hispanics Organized for Progress and Education held its eighth Gala Dinner at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel. This year’s winners were Helen (Carreras) Cruz of Fredonia and Chase Manhattan Bank. Mrs. Cruz was one of the first volunteers when the Friendly Kitchen opened its doors in 1984 and has continued to volunteer ever since.

Thirty years ago — 1989

A number of representatives from local police agencies spoke to East Dunkirk residents regarding a Neighborhood Watch Program. The program is being organized by Richard and Bonnie Purol, who were prompted by an increase in criminal incidents in the neighborhood to look at ways area residents could protect themselves. Speakers included Sgt. Richard Saletta of the Sheriff’s Department, Lt. Frank Lewandowski, representing the Dunkirk Police Department and State Trooper Carl Lis.

Forty years ago – 1979

A three-way race for mayor highlights this year’s Dunkirk city elections. About 8,150 registered voters are eligible to vote in the city elections. The spotlight will be focused on the mayor’s race between Gilbert Snyder, the incumbent Republican; Gary Michalak, the Democrat and Clemens J. Lutz, the independent. It is the third straight mayoral race with at least three candidates. Democrats hold a better than 2-1 margin over Republicans in the city.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Robert “Butch” Bell, 113 Howard Ave., Fredonia recently rolled a 300 game at Red Dot Lanes in Fredonia. In his 11 years of bowling, Butch has rolled several 279 games and also had a 688 series. For his effort, he will receive the ABC 300 award and a check from the proprietor of Red Dot Lanes. The last 300 game rolled in the area was by Rodney Potter, who rolled a 300-691 at Bowl Again Lanes in Cassadaga on Jan. 10,1966.
