Twenty years ago – 1999

It took more than 50 years for Cassadaga resident Donald Bemus to actually hold in his hands the Purple Heart he earned in World War II as a tailgunner on an Air Force B-17. The plane was shot down in Hungary while on a mission and Don ended up spending three months as a patient in a Russian hospital. The half century it took for Don to receive his medal almost parallels the length of time it took him to openly share his experiences that led to his earning it.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Members of the Sheridan VFW Post 6390 color guard served as the honor guard during the National Anthem before the Buffalo Bills-Indianapolis Colts football game at Rich Stadium. Members of the guard include Ralph Wollaston (who carried the Post flag), Robert and Ronald Keddie, Peter Krupinski, Al Wagonblott, Addison Bell, Charles Helwig (who carried the American flag) and guard captain Wayne Nephew.

Forty years ago – 1979

Employees of Dunkirk Radiator Corp. were recognized recently at a dinner at Shorewood Country Club for excellence of merchandise supplied to Sears Roebuck during the past year. A Sears Symbol of Excellence plaque was presented to Dunkirk Radiator, which manufactures cast iron boilers for the company.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Salvatore J. Rizzo, a 16-year-old junior at Fredonia High School, is the Student of the Week. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam C. Rizzo, 54 Cushing St., Fredonia, Salvatore has been a student council representative for the past two years and currently serves as treasurer. He is a member of the Distributive Education Club and the junior class executive committee. He plans a career in business adminstration.
