Thirty years ago — 1990

Matt Stafford, a sixth-grader at Fredonia Elementary School, won the Fredonia Central School District’s geography bee, putting him one step closer to winning a $25,000 college scholarship from the National Geographic Society in its National Geography Bee. Runnerup was Wesley Bartoo, a seventh grader. Other participants were Jenette Miller, John Freitas, Amber Coppings, Matt Maxwell, Ashwini Deshpande, Evan Cobb, Jim Briggs, Sean Glennon, Stephen Eimers, Nick Reiff and Vincent Domenico.

Forty years ago — 1980

Aunt Janet’s Restaurant in the D&F Plaza is sponsoring an annual “My Favorite Aunt Contest.” Children under 16 are welcome to enter by writing about their favorite aunt in 40 words or less. The winner will receive a complete birthday party for 15 at Aunt Janet’s and a television set.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Stanley Kulpa, owner of the Rangelite Restaurant, 15 North Deer St., Dunkirk has been granted a permit to rebuild a section of the restaurant gutted by a Jan. 16 fire.
