Retrospective

Thirty years ago — 1990

Tim Fote, a student at the Fredonia BOCES, has been chosen Student of the Week. He is the son of Samuel and Diane Fote of Dunkirk. A senior at Dunkirk High School, Tim is enrolled in the food trades program at BOCES. He is currently working as a part-time cook and also plays in the band, “Solutions Unknown.” Tim plans on attending Alfred State College.

Forty years ago — 1980

Brooks Hospital was due for a “Leap Year Day” baby, having had none born during the past two Leap Year Days in 1976 and 1972. But Feb. 29, 1980 made up for it when Brooks witnessed the birth of five babies, probably one of the highest totals ever locally. The only girl in the batch squeaked in just before the stroke of midnight.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Local recipients of the Elks National Foundation “Most Valuable Student” scholarship award were Donald Michalak and Rebecca Smith of Cardinal Mindszenty High School and Mary Lou Barhite of Silver Creek Central School.
