Thirty years ago — 1990

Dunkirk Mayor Greg Krauza intends to send out samples of those pesky black and white striped shellfish known as zebra mussels so the area’s state and federal elected officials will know exactly what they feel and look like. The samples will be accompanied by a letter from Krauza to Rep. Henry Nowak thanking him for co-sponsoring a bill that will spend $40 million to fight the mussels, which are spreading around the Great Lakes.

Forty years ago — 1980

Wheelock School first and second graders taught by Mrs. Frances Poland are getting involved with current politics, primary voting in particular. As a result of her letter informing President Carter of the class interest, Amanda Burlett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Burlett of the Fredonia-Stockton Road, now has a souvenir — a White House reply thanking her for her note and her support.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Historic Peacock Inn, one of Chautauqua County’s oldest landmarks, is slated for demolition to make way for a parking area adjacent to the county’s $5.3 million office building complex now nearing completion.
