Thirty years ago — 1990

Will Amtrak passenger trains soon be stopping in Dunkirk? It’s a distinct possibility, according to Roy A. Davis, Chautauqua County coordinator for the Empire State Passengers Association. Mr. Davis said if the railroad is allowed to meet its capital needs, within two years Amtrak could be restoring direct rail passenger service to the city.

Forty years ago — 1980

A feature story about Dunkirk street names reveals that two-time New York state Gov. DeWitt Clinton was largely responsible. Clinton purchased land in 1825 in what is now the First and Second wards. He named 11 streets for birds: Martin, Canary, Dove, Eagle, Finch, Pelican, Jay, Lark, Plover, Robin and Swan. Other streets were named for animals, including Armadillo, Lion (now Main Street), Leming, Margay, Ocelot, Pangolin, Ounce, Otter, Ermine, Antelope, Genet, Jerboa and Serval. And two, Mullet and Pike, were named after fish.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Gary Everts of Westfield has been selected as a member of the 44-voice Westminster College Concert Choir, now on its annual tour to four states in eight days. A music education major at Westminster, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall J. Everts, 97 N. Gale St., Westfield.
