Thirty years ago — 1990

Former Dunkirk resident Mark Brazill lost out to another comic this week in the second round of the “Star Search” talent show. Brazill won the competition in his first appearance last week with a perfect score. This week, however, the judges gave him and his opponent identical scores and a secret vote by the audience at the end of the show tilted in favor of the challenger.

Forty years ago — 1980

A report scheduled for presentation shortly is expected to recommend against preserving the Sacred Heart bell tower as a Dunkirk city landmark. Several consultants, including experts from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, have indicated that preserving the tower with the church would be a costly venture with a pricetag of at least $100,000.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Elizabeth Barbnecht, a junior at Dunkirk High School, has been selected as the April Calendar Girl. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henrich Barbnecht, 826 Washington Ave., Dunkirk.
