Thirty years ago — 1990
At least one segment of Chautauqua County’s Amish population has been hard-hit by an outbreak of measles over the past few weeks. A spokesman for the county Health Department said there were 63 confirmed cases, all of them among Amish families. Amish religious belief does not condone vaccination, making them as a group vulnerable to a highly infectious viral disease like measles.
Forty years ago — 1980
A ground-breaking ceremony was held recently for a $750,000 three-level addition to the Woodbury Vineyards Winery on South Roberts Road in Dunkirk. The addition will contain an aging cellar, a public wine tasting and retail sales area on the ground level, and an events and meeting room for groups on the upper level. The Woodburys expect to begin selling their wines at the winery some time this month and in local liquor stores and restaurants May 1.
Fifty years ago — 1970
Mayor F. Neil Chaffie has recommended the formation of a Narcotics Advisory Council. Recommended to serve on the council were Dr. William W. Kunz, Clarence M. Snyder, Dr. Robert L. Cooley, the Rev. Godfrey Kasper and Dr. L. Walter Schultze.
