Thirty years ago — 1990

The winner of the annual jelly bean guessing contest sponsored by the Dunkirk Recreation Department is Mike Mleczko of School 5, with a guess of 7,010 which was only one away from the actual number of beans, 7,011. For his efforts, he received a party for his school. Other finishers in the top three throughout the city were: Walter Meadows of St. Hyacinth’s, K-1; and Joseph Fred of School 5, 2-3.

Forty years ago — 1980

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph LaPorte of Westfield recently returned home form a three-week tour of eight European countries, hosted by the J.I. Case Co., makers of farm machinery. Mr. LaPorte is a senior officer at LaPorte Farm Equipments Inc., and won the trip for being in the top 10 in tractor dealer sales in the United States.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Ground breaking ceremonies were held recently for the new Free Methodist Church on Matteson Street in Fredonia. The Rev. M. Daningburg is pastor of the church.
