Thirty years ago — 1990

The recent fire at the Samuel Cimino VFW Post on North Main Street in Silver Creek has rendered the building a total loss. Eight fire companies responded to the fire shortly after 6:30 a.m. on April 21. About 100 firefighters battled the smoky blaze. As the building burned, at least one veteran took the loss hard. He was seen clutching an American flag under his arm, a tear rolling down his cheek.

Forty years ago — 1980

The Forestville Central Hornet Band has left for a tour to South New Berlin, NY. This tour is the first part of an exchange program between the two bands, with Forestville reciprocating early next spring. The 67-member band will perform in concert with the New South Berlin Concert and Stage Bands. The Forestville Hornet colorguard will give a special demonstration.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Ardyce R. Carlson, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Carlson, 75 Union St., Westfield, is Student of the Week. She is valedictorian of the senior class at Westfield Academy and Central School.
