Awards recipients at the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet included Donald and Betty Jo MacPhee, “Service to Humanity”; Sam St. George, Community Service Person of the Year; Robert and David Penharlow, Retail Persons of the Year; and William Larson, Business Person of the Year.

Forty years ago — 1980

Cortland Privateer of Fredonia has turned professional ski racer. A 1979 Fredonia High School graduate and the son of George and Katherine Privateer of 88 Risley St., Fredonia, Cortland turned pro in October. He will be competing in the Pro B tour, racing in Eastern Division states of Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and New York. Cortland has been a member of the United States Ski Association for five years.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Joseph Dudek of Dunkirk has been selected as the OBSERVER Student of the Week. He is a senior at Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk.
