Thirty years ago — 1990

The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has given Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) permission to proceed with construction of a medical waste treatment facility in the north county industrial park on Progress Road in the town of Sheridan. Actual construction of the $3 million facility will commence this month and the 16,000-square-foot steel building should be in operation by early summer.

Forty years ago — 1980

Gowanda Mayor Donald Lazar announced that he will not be a candidate for re-election in March 1981. Having served as mayor of the village for nine years, Mr. Lazer admitted that he had “had enough and perhaps someone else will be more effective in resolving the internal problems existing in municipal hall.” He went on to say that these personality conflicts were a negative influence and interfered with village business procedures.

Fifty years ago — 1970

For the fifth time in as many weeks, backup quarterback/kicker George Blanda pulled out a last-second victory for the Oakland Raiders. In his most recent game, the 43-year-old hero kicked a 26-yard field goal to beat the San Diego Chargers, 20-17. Only a week ago, Blanda kicked a 52-yarder to clinch a victory.
