Thirty years ago — 1991

An OBSERVER photo show Carl Lyle and Donald Corson leading the procession of athletes around the Silver Creek High School pool, site of the inaugural Northern Chautauqua County Special Olympics Swim Meet. A total of 75 swimmers took part in both shallow- and deep-end events. Head coaches Sharon Morrison, Mary Benson and Maureen Brink organized the event.

Forty years ago — 1981

The officials of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) visited Fredonia on April 22 to conduct a dedicatory service for the recently-completed chapel on Chestnut Street in the town of Pomfret. According to Mormon practice, a chapel is not dedicated until the building is completely paid for and free from debt. Thus, though the Fredonia Chapel was completed in June 1979, it was only recently approved for dedication.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Mark Orlando, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Orlando, 271 East Main St., Westfield has returned from Florida where he signed a letter of intent to attend Florida State University. The Cardinal Mindszenty High School senior and All-Catholic League quarterback will receive a full NCAA football scholarship at FSU.
