Agency assists in cancer prevention

Editor, OBSERVER:

The mission of Cancer Services Program is to increase the proportion of women and men in New York state who are up-to-date on recommended preventive cancer screenings.

Our goal is to increase public awareness on the importance of early detection of cancer, assist the uninsured or underinsured and high-deductible populations to access and navigate available cancer screening and diagnostic and treatment service, and assist with referrals to NYS of Health Insurance Marketplace and Navigators.

The population we serve are uninsured men 50 and over and uninsured women 40 and over. We can assist with mammograms and clinical breast exams, pap and pelvic exams, Breast and Cervical biopsies. Help with treatment for breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancers may also be available. The Cancer Services Program works in collaboration with many local community partners, physicians and health care facilities. The program has worked very hard all across the state to promote awareness and screening for early detection for cervical, colorectal, and breast cancer.

Cancer Services Program has been providing services to men and women for more than 20 years. Although, we have served thousands of people, we are still serving less than 20 percent of women who don’t have insurance and cannot afford mammograms.

When a woman is screened and diagnosed early the 5 year survival rate is 99 percent. The bottom line is that early cancer screening does saves lives. Early screening increases chances of survival, successful treatment, and ultimately saves on medical costs for the state of New York.
