No celebrating jobless reports

Recent job indicators prove the mess this county remains in.

Last week, the state Labor Department reported Chautauqua County had lost 600 jobs from September 2013 to last month. The good news? The unemployment rate fell, we think, to 5.9 percent from 7.4 percent.

However, on closer inspection, the total number of jobs at this time last year was at a higher level last year, at 56,800 jobs or 1,500 more than we currently have in the county.

By the way, it’s boom time for the rest of the state. Currently, there are more private-sector jobs at this time than ever before at 7,614,500.

We’re still behind the curve.
