Choice hits close to home

In all honesty, this corner believes area school districts could do a better job of sharing positions, especially with the superintendent post.

We have seen this concept work in Clymer and Panama and the plan would have made sense for the two districts in our area that were seeking a new lead administrator.

For now, Pine Valley continues to be served by David Kurzawa, an interim appointment, while Forestville has done what it always has: it appointed another person for the job.

Renee Garrett, who is from Ontario, N.Y., begins her first day on the job this week. “Renee brings a breath of fresh air to our district. … Renee was our top pick and it was unanimous,” said Sylvester Cleary, Forestville school board president. “We searched high and low and we have all the confidence in this woman. She is going to bring not only professionalism, but she is going to continue the vision of excellence that this board has set forth that we’ve been working on the past few years. We are just tickled pink to have you and your family join our family here at Forestville.”

Garrett also brings to the district something recent superintendents have not: she plans to live in the Forestville area, which is a very important piece for someone who runs a school.

Too often, superintendents choose to live outside the district, some even in Erie County. To live where you work, especially in a public position, gives you better insight into the successes and problems of a region.

Garrett’s learning curve, by choosing to live locally, will be accelerated.
