Goal accomplished for 30 years

More than 30 years ago, the State University of New York at Fredonia built Steele Hall. It brought a new basketball court and introduced an ice arena, which led to the university hockey team, as well as a youth organization.

Over the weekend, a celebration of youth hockey was held with a couple of exhibition games, as well as a dinner banquet. Sam Drayo, first president of the Northern Chautauqua County Youth Hockey Association, spoke at the White Inn of the early years and how he became president.

He and the others on the inaugural board were at the start of something special.

The tradition continues today with a varsity Steelers team that is challenging for the lead in its division, as well as nearly 50 new skaters who are part of the Mite group, the youngest segment of skaters.

Past and current skaters and parents have benefited from the fun and camaraderie provided by the association.

It is something special – and it has always been done through the efforts of volunteers. A salute to all those – past and current – who have been a part of a winning tradition.
