County: Bright results in Legislature
Even though we believe county legislators were incorrect in approving a 0.5 percent sales tax hike, the discussion and vote was another welcome change from the reduced governing body.
Last week, legislators approved asking the state to increase our county sales-tax rate from 7.5 percent to 8 percent. The vote was approved 14-4 with one legislator absent.
When the Legislature was 25 members, votes on important issues normally would be down party lines – 13-12 – or unanimous. What happened last week was democracy in action.
Three Republicans and another Democrat voted “no.” In doing so, they got their message across in a civilized tone. When the Legislature was formerly at 25, it often was a nasty setting for the minority, which was driven by politics.
Politics, however, has seemed to take a back seat. The 19 legislators all seem sincere and willing to work in the best interest of their constituents and the county.
The Legislature reduction seems to be a success.
