Dunkirk needs an update

Want to visit Dunkirk? Don’t go to visitdunkirk.com. It’s not that the site isn’t working. At the time of writing this editorial, the site worked just fine. It’s just that all the events listed are from 2014.

So, according to visitdunkirk.com, we should have had Picnic in the Point this past weekend, followed by the Fourth of July, Wreck ‘n Roll, and then the Heritage Festival.

Excluding the Fourth of July, all the festivals have either changed or been canceled. Picnic in the Point this year has been moved to September. The Heritage Festival was canceled last year before it even took place, and there is no “Wreck ‘n Roll” this year, which outside of July Fourth was probably the most successful city-sponsored event.

The site doesn’t list the Beach Bash which is taking place a month from today. Nor does visitdunkirk.com mention any other festivals taking place in the city, like the Great Lakes Experience, the Classic Car Cruise, Harvest Chapel Festivities, the Kosciuszko Club Street Dance, events at the lighthouse and more.

For Music on the Pier, all the bands and dates listed are incorrect. And these bands don’t have the year listed, so any visitor looking might think the dates and band names are trustworthy.

The city’s Facebook site isn’t any better. On Facebook, the city of Dunkirk’s last update was April 17, 2014 and the site directs you to dunkirktoday.com which has a link to visitdunkirk.com. There’s also Dunkirk Festivals on Facebook, last updated May 6, which also has a link to visitdunkirk.com.

We hear all the time that tourism is the way for Chautauqua County to move forward economically. Well if that’s the case, Dunkirk needs to step up its effort in promoting the city. Because right now, fireworks is about the only thing that visitors will know about.
