Camp programs provide smiles

Where have about 300 city of Dunkirk children spent a portion of their summer? By heading out to the great outdoors at Camp Gross, just outside of Cassadaga on Route 60.

Last week, the program concluded with a series of skits and an ice cream social for the youngsters on Friday afternoon. Parents, city officials and camp leaders took pride in the efforts and work done to make this annual summer project take place.

Guest ice-cream scooper Larissa Aldrich, who oversaw the program for years, was on hand the final day as the Summer Better Than Others Day Camp at Camp Gross concluded its 25th year. Aldrich retired in 2013 from the position of city youth bureau coordinator, but had plenty of friendly greetings while handing out the sprinkles and syrup.

She remains proud of the connection between Camp Gross and the city and its importance of the event for the youth.

All who participated – this year and previous years – deserve a round of applause.
