NRG: Take time this Saturday

Those green placards calling to “Repower Dunkirk” have been sprouting up again on lawns across our region. On Saturday, however, our region will need another sign of unity when a rally for the NRG plant takes place on the city pier.

Beginning at 10:30 a,m., the gathering is to once again show support for a major community partner. NRG Energy Inc. is willing to convert its coal-fired plant to one that produces energy using natural gas. But a lawsuit, which came to light over the summer, has put a halt to those plans.

It’s deja vu all over again. Even after state Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the project would occur in December 2013.

Dunkirk’s plant received support at a Public Service Commission hearing at the State University of New York at Fredonia that is unmatched as more than 2,000 showed up at the Williams Center in favor of the plan to repower. A rally held later that year – in bitter December temperatures – brought another 600 residents out.

Our support of the plant is well documented. One more showing, however, needs to happen on Saturday.
