Forestville: Policy needs another look

Friday morning was problematic for many associated with the Forestville Central Schools. On Thursday evening, the superintendent received a call about a potential threat from a county sheriff’s deputy.

After many of the children arrived at the school the next morning, parents received a call about the school being in a lockout. It did not sit well with many — and some parents had their children removed from the building on that day.

During a lockout, the perceived danger is outside of the school. Administrators ensure the building’s perimeter is secured and classes are allowed to continue.

Needless to say, it could have been handled differently and better. A call before school that morning could have been sent — or the district could have delayed classes. That way, parents could have made a choice — instead of hearing about the issue after the day was just beginning.

Forestville does a lot of things right as a school district. It is a community center.

But the handling of this incident has some unhappy, which will force the district to look at its policies going forward.
