Setting stage for November

Polls are open from noon to 9 p.m. today for primary elections regarding state positions, including governor, lieutenant governor as well as attorney general. In addition to some local races, the other primary pits incumbent Sheriff Joseph Gerace against challenger Jim Quattrone for the Chautauqua County Conservative Party nod.

Of great concern for area residents — even those who are not Democrats — is the race for the state’s second in command. Challenging incumbent Kathy Hochul is Jumaane Williams, a member of the New York City Council. With Hochul’s connection to Western New York — compared to a downstate candidate — there is a possibility our region could lose some of its growing clout with Albany.

As is usually the case, New York City and Long Island — with its distinct population advantage — usually dictates who wins. Still, if it turns out to be close every vote counts.
