HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

COLD AS ICE — These colder temperatures have at least one good thing from them — they’ve allowed Chautauqua Lake to be cold enough to construct an ice castle for the annual President’s Day Weekend Winter Festival in Mayville. Volunteers have been hard at work building the ice castle. Whether the castle is constructed or not, the winter festival happens annually. There will be a cold water rescue demonstration, a polar plunge, a pet parade, bonfires, snowman building contest and more. It should be lots of fun.

USA 18U — Dunkirk native Frank Jagoda has been named the director of USA Baseball’s 18U National Team. In 2017 he was an assistant coach for the 15U National Team that won a gold medal at the COPABE Pan-Am “AA” Championships. We wish him success in his new role.

LOTS OF LAUGHS — Summer will be here before you know it and the National Comedy Center is already making plans for the upcoming Lucille Ball Comedy Festival. Comedians John Mulaney and Sebastian Maniscalco are both scheduled to perform in Jamestown Aug. 9 and 10. More performers are expected to be announced soon.

WORST

BOCES CUTS — According to Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES District Superintendent David O’Rourke, a proposal by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to cap expense-based aid to schools could impact BOCES. Schools may be forced to limit sending students to Career and Technical Education classes. Educational expenses are extremely high in New York. However, we believe there’s an advantage to sending some students to CTE classes instead of traditional education classes. Industries in the region want more technically trained graduates. Making these cuts are not going to help students or the community at large.
