DUNKIRK: An energy in JCC plan

No brand of binoculars can clearly tell anyone what downtown Dunkirk will look like in the next five years, especially Central Avenue. Since the major Masonic Temple fire of February 2010, the former main drag of the city becomes a ghost town in the late afternoon.

Retail shops are a heavy lift for any municipality, especially when you consider the online competition. But the service sector, specifically health care, restaurants and banking, seem to provide a bit of optimism.

Now think of the possibilities if Jamestown Community College on Route 60 does want to relocate somewhere within the vicinity of City Hall. There is instant traffic on the avenue with students and instructors — and it may lead to more business in downtown.

Of course, the vision remains in the planning stages. “The north campus is interested in looking at the feasibility of locating to downtown Dunkirk,” said Rebecca Yanus, city development director. “This would be a great opportunity for Central Avenue, which is their focus for a future move. They want to better understand a couple of locations to be looked at and the costs associated with that.”

A feasibility study could be in the works soon for a cost. It would be money well spent.
