Highs and Lows: Some of the best, worst of the week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

BEST

COUNTY FAIR — It’s been a hot week, but a good one at the Chautauqua County Fair. There’s been plenty of action on the grandstands, the 4-Hers have had many of their animals and projects on display, people in the community are displaying items in Floral Hall and more. It’s not too late to go. The fair continues through Sunday.

SWING THE BATS — Congratulations goes out to the Fredonia 8-10 Little League baseball team for winning their league crown. The 11-12 Fredonia All-Stars fall short of their district title against Southwestern. The 8-10 Girls Little League State Softball Tournament continues until Sunday. It’s great to see so many opportunities for students both local and statewide to get out on the diamond and play ball this summer.

ATHENEX PROGRESS — It’s just the outer shell that’s up, but when you look at the Athenex building on Route 5 in the town of Dunkirk, it’s impressive. Soon that building will be filled with people, likely manufacturing drugs to fight cancer. It’s going to be a big shot in the arm financially and hopefully will help make a difference in people’s lives who are struggling with cancer as well.

WORST

PARK PROGRAM CHILD — A grandmother was upset for obvious reasons after her 7-year-old grandson was apparently allowed to sign himself out of Gowanda’s parks and recreation program and went unaccounted for, for two hours. No, the child was never in any danger; apparently the boy had gone to a friend’s house after not knowing where to go when his peers left. Still, like Gowanda Mayor Dave Smith stated, “Those kids are our responsibility. We take that on when we do the program.” Any park program needs to make sure all children are accounted for at all times and that the child doesn’t leave without his or her parent or guardian.
