HIGHS AND LOWS: Some of best, worst of week

Here are some of the best — and worst — of the week:

Best

STOCKTON HEADSTONE — A local Revolutionary War veteran’s grave site has been provided a new headstone after the original one was destroyed. His family was able to secure a headstone after learning about the stone and deteriorating cemetery. The stone is now proudly on display in the Greenwood Cemetery in the town of Stockton. It’s a fitting honor.

HELPING 4-H — Vince DeJoy recently donated a freezer from the former Friendly’s Restaurant to the local 4-H chapter. With Jimmy’s taking over the building, it was not needed. The donation came at the perfect time, because 4-H’s previous freezer was dying and may not have survived the Chautauqua County Fair season. Instead, the 4-H snack booth was again able to sell food, snacks and their “Fair Famous” milkshakes. It all worked out perfectly.

ALWAYS A COACH — Fredonia Hillbilly alumnus Kirsta Wheelock played basketball for the Naval Academy Prep School this past year. Now she’s headed to the U.S. Naval Academy this fall. But she shared a story about a time when her former Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle drove eight hours to see her play a game. “The way she treats me and all of her former players is amazing,” said Wheelock. Zirkle is the kind of coach who doesn’t just help students during their high school years; she’s always their coach.

SADNESS

FATAL FIRE — Last weekend an early morning fire at a residential building that housed a day care center killed five children and sent the owner to the hospital. The children ranged in ages from 8 months to 7 years. Three of those who died were the children of a volunteer firefighter. He was actually at a call just blocks away in Erie. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who continue to grieve.
