Dunkirk: Keeping attention on Senior Center

One project that has been put on hold, and nearly forgotten, due to the COVID-19 pandemic involved major changes at the Dunkirk Senior Center. During the fall, information sessions drew a large segment of the public with concerns.

Rebecca Wurster, city development director, understands the delicate issue. At a recent city Economic Development Committee, Wurster talked about the lack of progress taking place at the location.

“I really wanted all public participation on this,” she said. “The population that it serves and I want to make sure it’s the safest environment to get the best input from those people who utilize the facility.”

Some of the improvements being considered would include an activity area, two physicians offices for rotating doctors, two new restrooms that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, two clerical offices and window and door replacements for more energy efficiency in the building. These would be funded through a $750,000 grant.

For the most part, the center has been quiet and closed in recent months due to the coronavirus. Keeping the Dunkirk seniors informed and part of the renovations, however, is something Wurster and the city are correct to do.
