Challenge met to help community

We have written in this space far too often about the insecurity many in our communities have when it comes to having food to put on the table. In Fredonia, despite appearances, the poverty rate is growing as is the need.

Last month, lines of cars could be seen at the Fredonia Food Panty, located at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church. In October, the organization once again led the charge in the Feeding Fredonia Challenge.

Even in a pandemic, the residents responded. A total of 3,500 pounds of food — as well as plenty of monetary donations — were received.

“The motto of this year’s Challenge was ‘Everything Helps.’ No matter if someone came with boxes and bags of food or with two cans of food,” the organizers said. “No matter if someone donated $50 or $5. Everything helped make this year’s food drive a success.

Area schools and churches also contributed to the effort. With Christmas just around the corner, remember how much need there is where we live. A donation to an organization such as Chautauqua County Rural Ministry– or to the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County — is one gift that is always worth giving.
