POMFRET Town used leverage in water contract

The OBSERVER's View

Last week’s approval of a contract between Fredonia and Pomfret for water — on just a quick glance — looks as though the village was in desperation mode. Town leaders seemed quite content with the deal on Wednesday at their meeting.

In fact, Supervisor Dan Pacos deserves to be commended. It appears he worked in the best interest of his constituents to get the rates lowered. Of course, Fredonia’s erratic water system — which left customers without drinkable water for 20 days last September — also played a role in reductions.

“I’m pleased that although it took a long, long time and a lot of effort that we were able to reach an agreement that I think was good for all Pomfret residents and businesses inside the village and outside the village,” he said. That’s what I was elected to do when I came here and I think Deputy Supervisor (Ann) Eckman and I did that; it was always our preference to remain with the village water supplier.”

Fredonia’s approval of the contract did not go as smoothly — and barely passed. While revenues from the town will be less for the village, it’s better than nothing.

Pomfret could have walked away and gone to the North County Water District, which is a more reliable supplier. They did not — and were a good neighbor in the process.
