FREDONIA New board makes statement

Fredonia’s new Village Board made a significant decision in its first meeting of the new year. On Monday, it rescinded a decision made by previous leaders in late November to hire Joe Gerace as the new police chief.

Minutes later, trustees by a 5-0 vote decided to promote from within the department in naming David Price as permanent probationary chief.

There is nothing wrong at all with how this played out. For its part, the new group of trustees leans Republican. Gerace, the former longtime Chautauqua County sheriff, is of the Democratic party.

That, however, may not be the biggest reason for the change. In running for office last fall, new Trustee David Bird highlighted the fact he thought village employees needed to be treated better. This could be a step in that direction.

With one dilemma out of the way, plenty more remain. Even though it is early, we hope there is continued unity — and progress — when it comes to major village issues.
