County Fair Derby again steals the show at event

Soon after Todd Ellman’s victory in the wire-class full-size event, he was pictured with his trophy on the OBSERVER Facebook page Sunday evening. As you might expect, the response was fantastic with more than 33,000 views and plenty of congratulations.

Ellman, a Dunkirk resident, was one of the four major winners of this year’s Chautauqua County Fair’s Demolition Derby. It was the first event of its kind since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

From all accounts, it was a welcome return. “It took months of work to get the car ready, but it was worth it.” Ellman told the OBSERVER of his 1967 Chevrolet Imperial. “First place!”

It was a very different county fair this year in Dunkirk due to the layoff. Despite that, organizers — all volunteers — did their best to make the event go on while providing plenty of entertainment and education about this region.
