NIGHT OUT Event spotlights a partnership

Nearly a decade ago, former Fredonia police chief Brad Meyers took it upon himself to cancel an event that allowed residents to get to know officers while talking about the importance of a safe community. It was a selfish decision that was blamed on a lack of resources.

This year — as well as in 2021 — that event has returned. Tonight at Russell Joy Park from 5 to 7 p.m., the village department will be taking part in National Night Out along with so many other municipalities around the nation. Additionally, the Dunkirk Police Department will be marking 29 years of participating.

“A strong Police/Community partnership within the community is the best weapon we have in keeping our city safe,” said Dunkirk Police Chief Dan Ortolano. “It only takes a few minutes of time to get out and get involved and make a difference in the community. We have seen a very large change in the program over the years and more families are becoming involved, that is what this program is all about.”

Cassadaga, which does not have a department, will host an event Wednesday. As Dunkirk has learned throughout its history, the gathering is a perfect time for interaction with those they are protecting and assisting throughout the year.
