Phil - I agree that "we" could get along just fine with just the sheriff's department. I'll take it a bit further and state that we could even get by fine by downsizing the sheriff's department as well. However, why is it wrong for a town, village or city to desire and pay for their own services if that's what people there want? It's no different than providing garbage collection, parks, leaf collection, etc. If that community wants it and is willing to pay - why not?

The reality is that Chautauqua is a rural county with no big cities and as a result we have a very low crime rate. This is based on a study done by Business First of Buffalo. We should have only one law enforcement agency, centralized at the county level with satellite stations as needed. There are about 300 law enorcement personnel in the county. Using fear tactics, critics of consolidation will always fight to preserve the status quo. The cost of law enforcement is a major factor in the decline of our county.

maybe if you went to the school board meetings and found out how much of the budget is there due to state mandates you wouldn't be so quick to judge.I don't work for a school but I do my research. Go after the state first to help take away some or their must do's with no money to help
