Man out after arrest mishap spurs NY mall flight

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) — A shoplifting suspect whose arrest sparked a brief panic at a Long Island mall when the sound of a display case falling was mistaken for gunfire has been released without bail.

Newsday reported Thursday that 19-year-old Aaron Darby was released on an appearance ticket on the petit larceny charge from the Christmas Eve incident at Macy's at the Roosevelt Field mall. The newspaper says he's due back in court Jan. 7.

Shoppers began calling 911 and fleeing the mall after hearing what they thought were gunshots. But Nassau County police determined the sound wasn't gunfire, but rather a glass display case falling over and breaking as mall security staffers tried to arrest Darby.

Several people suffered minor injuries during the incident. The mall reopened after about 15 minutes.
