"We want the girls to be exposed to new skills and to perfect the skills they've already learned."
That's how Fredonia girls' basketball coach Carol Zirkle summarized the upcoming girls' basketball camp she will be holding from June 25-28.
The camp is open to girls entering grades 3-12 and there are still plenty of spots available for interested athletes.
Pictured above are photos from last year’s Fredonia girls’ basketball camp at Fredonia High?School. The camp will take place again this year, starting Monday. There is still time to sign up. For more information, contact Carol?Zirkle at 785-0283.
"Everyone's welcome," Zirkle added. "What we do is break them up based on age and ability. If you play varsity or jayvees, you'll be in one gym. If you played modified, you'll be in another gym. If you have no experience with organized basketball, you'll be in another gym."
Zirkle will have plenty of experienced help in running the camp. Gary Saunders (Chautauqua Lake), Kathy Smith (Jamestown) and Kathy Machemer (Ripley) all have high school coaching experience and will be on hand to share their knowledge.
"The focus of the camp is fundamentals," Zirkle commented. "We want the fundamentals to be established so that you can become a better player. The idea is to teach you new skills and improve the skills you already have.
"You'll get knowledge," she continued. "But you have to be willing to pick up a basketball over the rest of the summer. We're teaching skills and letting them have fun, but we want the kids to walk away with something they know they need to work on."
In addition to drills that enhance the fundamentals, campers will also take part in daily games and competitions. On the last day of camp, there will be an awards ceremony held at 3 p.m.
"We invite all the parents to come," Zirkle said of the ceremony. "We recognize the kids who won the competitions throughout the week."
The cost of the camp is $95 per camper and all campers are expected to bring their own lunches. Cold beverages will be for sale at lunch and at the end of each day. All participants are expected to arrive at the high school gymnasium between 8:30-8:55 a.m. and the camp will begin promptly at 9 a.m. Campers should be picked up at 3:30 p.m.
