Matthew J. Whalen Jr., 91, of Dunkirk died Thursday afternoon (Aug. 1, 2013) at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk.
He was born Feb. 21, 1922 in Buffalo, the son of the late Matthew J. Sr. and Mary (Carey) Whalen.
Mr. Whalen served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been employed as a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Buffalo.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and American Legion Post 62.
Survived by his wife, Evelyn (Damian) Whalen. Dearest uncle to several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (Bechstadt) Whalen; one sister and two brothers.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Monday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
