Darwins Health Club is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this week. The local fitness establishment first opened its doors Sept. 16, 1988 and has only been closed on Christmas Days since then.
Darwins, located at 47-53 Water St. in Fredonia, has seen several changes over the years in both equipment and infrastructure.
"If you were a member in 1988 and haven't been in the building since, then you would be amazed at the differences," Owner Ross Conti said. "In almost three decades there have been several transitions in exercise trends and some of these trends necessitated restructuring of internal walls to meet these new needs."

Other changes have been more programmatic. New formats of group exercise have been added such as Zumba, Body Pump and Pilates. More personal training, with the addition of new trainers, is another trend that has grown over the years.
What hasn't changed over the years is the philosophy that a basic membership should include a fitness evaluation, training, nutritional guidance, and group exercise classes - at no additional charge.
Another constant over the years is the feeling of "Esprit de Corps" that exists at Darwins.
"One of the reasons that we have thrived over the years is the feeling of belonging that is embraced at Darwins. We regularly hear from members that they feel very comfortable here and that comes from the attitude of our wonderful staff and instructors."
To celebrate this milestone anniversary Darwins is having daily drawings for prizes donated by Darwins and local merchants including: Upper Crust, Falcone Farms, 21 Brix, DFT Communications, The Brick Room and trainers Anibal Lopez, David Avila and Lin Liedke.
"Doing business in our community has been wonderful and we would like to thank all of our customers from the past 25 years, the merchants who have supported us, and all of the great people who have congratulated us on this occasion," Conti said.
