Parents for Parents, a monthly support group for family members and care givers of people with special needs will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the Connections North Center, 10825 Bennett Road (Route 60) in Dunkirk.
The workshop is for parents of children and adults who have developmental disabilities and who receive services through the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. It will help participants understand what to do if something goes wrong with a loved one's care. Workshop attendees will learn about the types of events that are considered "incidents, " will gain a better understanding of why and how incidents are documented, and learn what rights an individual and the family have.
Information about supports available to children on the autism spectrum also will be shared at the Dunkirk meeting.
Parents for Parents is organized by The Resource Center and Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc. The group, directed by a licensed master social worker, connects and supports families of individuals with special needs.
A Jamestown group meets the first Wednesday of the month, while the Dunkirk group meets the second Wednesday of the month.
New members are welcome to join Parents for Parents. Meetings are free. Those planning to attend should register ahead of time so organizers will have enough materials on hand. Parents desiring assistance with child care, respite or transportation should phone in advance to make arrangements. Those planning to bring their children must call ahead so that organizers can have enough children's activities and support staff on hand.
