The Dunkirk-Fredonia high school varsity hockey team started its season in grand fashion Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Williamsville.
The Steelers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nick Formanowicz, Matt Sheridan, Ryan Meredith and Matt Szalkowski. Assists were credited to Szalkowski, Mike Johnson, David Woloszyn and Sheridan, who added a goal in the second period on an assist from Kyle Leysath.
Also in the second period, Kevin Ganey added a goal on an assist from Szalkowski and Riley Harris, who added another assist on Szalkowski's second goal of the game.
Leysath scored unassisted in the third period while Formanowicz added his second goal of the game on an assist from Sheridan.
Jared Hebner picked up the win between the pipes for the Steelers.
